Karatsu Kunchi Highlights
The origins of Karatsu Kunchi date back to the late 17th century, specifically to the Kanbun era during the Edo period (1603–1867). The term kunchi is believed to be a regional variation of kunichi, meaning "day of offerings." The festival is a tribute to the Shinto gods in gratitude for a fruitful harvest.
Central to the celebrations are fourteen historic floats known as hikiyama, which were crafted in the 19th century. Originally, there were fifteen floats, but one was lost during the Meiji era (1868–1912). These floats are believed to offer protection to the gods carried within their sacred mikoshi palanquins.
The festival begins with Yoiyama, the first day’s event, where the hikiyama floats converge at Karatsu Shrine. The evening kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with the iconic red lion float, the oldest one made in 1819, leading the procession. By 10:00 p.m., all the floats have gathered at the shrine, setting the stage for the following days' festivities.
The second day, known as Hikikomi, is the festival’s highlight. The day starts with a purification dance performed by young men, followed by the red lion hikiyama leading the mikoshi and other floats as they leave Karatsu Shrine to parade through the town. The floats are then taken to the seaside, where devotees muster their strength to pull them across the sand, before returning them to town in the afternoon.
On the festival's final day, the hikiyama floats make one last journey through the streets of Karatsu for the Town Parade, this time without the mikoshi. Residents from various districts, dressed in coordinated attire, guide the floats with spirited cries and music, eventually returning them to their resting place until the next year’s festival. If you miss the event, you can view all fourteen floats year-round at the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall.
During your visit, don’t miss the opportunity to savor Karatsu’s delicious local cuisine, especially the saw-edged perch, a dish representing the town’s hospitality and the abundance of the harvest.
