Winter in Japan

The country transforms into a picturesque wonderland when winter blankets Japan in snow. From experiencing the joy of the first snowfall to marveling at stunning winter light displays, Japan in winter is nothing short of enchanting. While many travelers flock to Japan during the cherry blossom season, winter offers its unique charm, filled with exciting adventures and breathtaking landscapes. Having just experienced Japan in January, I can vouch for its winter allure. From bustling seafood markets and steaming street food to tranquil snowy vistas, Tokyo and Osaka shine with new brilliance during this season. Here are some essential activities and sights to make your winter visit memorable.

Tokyo Highlights

  1. Tsukiji Fish Market

A trip to Tokyo wouldn’t be complete without visiting the famous Tsukiji Fish Market. Although some travelers criticize it as a tourist trap due to high prices, it remains a worthwhile destination—especially for first-time visitors eager to sample a wide variety of seafood. Winter is the prime time to savor the freshest seafood, including seasonal delights like shirako (cod sperm), uni (sea urchin), and snow crabs. Arriving around 8 AM is advisable to beat the crowds, as they begin to swell around 10-11 AM. Don’t miss out on gigantic oysters and grilled sweet scallops for a truly unique culinary experience.

Location: 4 Chome-13 Tsukiji, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan
Hours: 8 AM - 2 PM (Weekdays), 10 AM - 2 PM (Sundays & Holidays)

  1. Fukubukuro Shopping

Embrace the New Year with "hatsu-uri," or the first sales of the year, where shopping malls and department stores offer significant discounts. Look for "Fukubukuro," or lucky bags filled with a mix of items often at 50% off or more. This New Year tradition sees eager shoppers lining up for hours to snag these deals. Popular bags from brands like Sanrio and Starbucks are especially sought after, so plan accordingly!

  1. Hatsumode Tradition

As the New Year begins, many locals visit shrines and temples for hatsumode, or the first prayer of the year. This tradition involves expressing gratitude for the past year and praying for safety and prosperity in the year to come. Visitors can also purchase omikuji (fortune slips) to predict their luck for the year ahead. Notable spots in Tokyo include Sensoji Temple and Meiji Shrine, both bustling with visitors during this time.
