Your Essential Guide to JR East Passes: Unlocking Japan’s Rail Network
Amazing Japan!
When it comes to exploring Japan, many travelers are familiar with the Japan Rail Pass, which grants unlimited access to a vast network of trains, including most bullet trains, for a set period. This single pass made it easy for tourists to traverse the country, especially for popular routes like Tokyo to Kyoto, providing great value for those eager to discover Japan's highlights.

However, since the price increase in October 2023, the comprehensive Japan Rail Pass has become less accessible. What are travelers to do if they want to explore Japan without breaking the bank? Enter the regional rail passes tailored for specific areas, which is especially beneficial for those focusing on East Japan.
For anyone looking to explore the East Japan region, particularly Tokyo and its surroundings, we’re excited to introduce the two primary JR East Passes. Importantly, these passes are available for non-Japanese passport holders, making them accessible even to residents who are not Japanese citizens. Let’s dive into the details!
The Two Main JR East Passes
JR EAST PASS – Tohoku Area
The most sought-after option among JR East’s offerings is the Tohoku pass, priced at 30,000 JPY for five consecutive days. This pass provides unlimited travel on all JR East lines within its coverage area, which includes several Shinkansen routes: Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu, and Hokuriku. Additionally, you can use most regular JR bus routes and a few private railways, such as the Tokyo Monorail.
This pass is perfect for those venturing to the Tohoku region, which includes the prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima.
JR EAST PASS – Nagano, Niigata Area
For 27,000 JPY over five consecutive days, this pass is ideal for travelers focusing on the stunning landscapes and winter sports of Nagano and Niigata. It allows unlimited rides on all JR East trains in the area, including the Tohoku, Yamagata, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen. You can also access some private railways, such as the Echigo Tokimeki Railway, though only between specific stations.
Additional Regional Passes by JR East
JR East also offers a variety of other regional passes, with some designed exclusively for non-Japanese passport holders with Temporary Visitor status.
The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass (35,000 JPY for six consecutive days) extends the coverage of the Tohoku pass to include parts of Hokkaido, including Sapporo. Conversely, the JR Tohoku-South Hokkaido Rail Pass (30,000 JPY for six consecutive days) focuses on Tohoku and select areas in Hokkaido.
For those interested in exploring nearby prefectures, the JR Tokyo Wide Pass (15,000 JPY for three consecutive days) is available for both visitors and residents, covering areas like Tochigi and Gunma.
How to Purchase a JR East Pass
Getting your hands on a JR East Pass is straightforward! You can buy one directly from the JR East website. For travelers outside Japan, designated travel agencies and online booking platforms also offer these passes.
If you're already in Japan, you can easily purchase a pass from ticket vending machines equipped with passport readers at major stations, such as Tokyo and Shinagawa. Alternatively, you can visit a JR East Travel Service Center for assistance. Note that a Travel Service Center is distinct from a Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office, where passes cannot be purchased.
When you're ready to redeem your JR East Pass, you can collect it at a vending machine or a Travel Service Center. Just have your exchange voucher and passport on hand, and remember you can choose your preferred start date.
Using Your JR East Pass
Using the JR East Pass is simple. Once your selected start date arrives, insert your pass into the automatic ticket gate at the station. While you won’t need to show your passport to enter, it's essential to keep it with you in case of random inspections.
Certain trains, including bullet trains, may require seat reservations. Your JR East Pass allows you to make these reservations for free at any JR East ticket office or via reserved-seat ticket vending machines.
Once activated, your pass will be valid for five consecutive days, and changes to the validity period aren’t permitted.
